In 1849, about 700 Chinese arrived hoping to find work in mining gold. Most of the Chinese who immigrated to America were poor peasants from Southwestern China. The poor peasants couldn't pay for their fare to the United States. They had gotten loans from merchants from their own country and made a promise to them that they would pay off their debts once they found work in America. The Chinese were well received when they first arrived in America.
